Mahatma Gandhi's full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born in Porbandar, Gujarat on 2 October 1869. We know him as the Father of the Nation, while some people fondly call him Bapu.

He played the biggest role in liberating the country, he led the country in the path of truth and non-violence, that is why his birth anniversary is celebrated as the day of non-violence. It is the national holiday of India, celebrated annually to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

Respected Sir, Madam Community, my brothers and sisters, today we have gathered on this auspicious occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.

Mahatma Gandhi did his early studies in India while he went to England to complete his further studies and he studied law. Returned to India in 1915 after practicing law in South Africa.

After returning to India, Mahatma Gandhi led many movements, among which Champaran Movement, Ashahyog Movement, Dandi March or Quit India Movement are prominent. Mahatma Gandhi had given independence to the country by following the path of true non-violence, that is why his birth anniversary is also known as Non-Violence Day.

Gandhiji opposed alcohol. Gandhiji wanted that there should be no discrimination of any kind based on religion or caste in the society. Gandhiji wanted everyone to be treated equally, everyone to live together and women to be respected.

Gandhi Jayanti is marked by prayer services and tributes all over India, including at Gandhi's memorial, Raj Ghat, in New Delhi where he was cremated.

Popular activities include prayer meetings, commemorative ceremonies in different cities by colleges, local government institutions and socio-political institutions.
